These Pet Insurers Have Big Exclusions Affecting Popular Breeds

Not all pet insurance is built the same, but you usually have to dive deep into the exciting pages of the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) to uncover any hidden gaps in coverage or special clauses. While much of the general exclusions among pet insurance providers are identical, there are some notable exceptions which exclude entire conditions. We’re not talking rare conditions either. These are some of the most common conditions for some specific breeds which could make you think twice about the peace of mind your policy is really affording you.

To help you navigate this tricky world of exclusions, we’ve compiled the biggest examples of these exclusions and the breeds most affected.

By default, BOAS is excluded in the policies of these insurers, and requires a BOAS application form to be completed and accepted by them before coverage is provided. This application will require a visit to the vet and an examination of your dog.

Breeds succeptible to BOAS: French Bulldog

No Cover for IVDD, Patella Luxation, and Elbow Dysplasia

Almost all providers want you to keep up to date with your pet’s vaccines before they’ll step in to cover infectious diseases. While it can be argued that this is a good incentive to prioritise your pet’s vaccine schedule, accidents happen and missing a vaccine will leave you without cover should your pet fall sick with a communicable disease like cat flu or kennel cough. Vaccinations are also very easy to check on your vet history, so there’s no hiding from this one.

For ease of finding the few brands that don’t punish you in this way, we’ve listed them as well below.
